Everything you need while you're on duty

Who's who

Watson is white. Adler is not. Watson is about 2 years younger than Adler.

Watson

  • Will bark at you when you come in, just say hi and he'll stop.
  • Make sure you give him food gently, he's not demure.
  • He will fart. It will be awful. We can't pinpoint the cause.
  • Might be a dick about getting back in the car, pick him up or bribe him with treats.
  • More tolerant of other dogs than Adler.

Adler

  • Takes food very gently, will not bark at you.
  • Prefers being fully covered with blankets at all times.
  • Hates rain and will drool, but snow is fine.
  • Might look like she's dead when sleeping, or snore, she's fine.
  • Not into morning walks (see Walks tab).

Both actually love being covered with blankets, being warm, and cuddling.

How do I feed them?

Both eat same thing. If they're annoying in the morning, feed them and go back to bed, they'll go back to sleep.

Morning (no dinner)

  • 1.5 scoops kibble + water each
  • Watson gets the slow feeding bowl
  • Adler gets the normal bowl

After morning walk

  • Black ball with frozen thing in it

After afternoon walk

  • 1 glucosamine each
  • 1 raw egg
  • 1 chicken drumstick
Feed the raw egg & chicken outside or in the hallway, and shut the hallway door. Watson might bring raw chicken onto the couch, he won't bring it through the dog door for some reason.

Human food

Both dogs can have most human food, just avoid grapes, garlic, and onion.

Walk prep

Adler might be hesitant to get out of bed in the morning, just open the door and pretend to leave without her, and she'll come running. She does need to get out at least once a day. A leash can help convince her out of the car, or come with her (slip or flexi-lead).

Harness & e-collar

Both dogs wear the same harness now. Watson = white e-collar, Adler = black e-collar.

If cold

Coats are orange, doesn't matter which dog gets which. They're in the dog closet. Hook around their back legs.

Actual walks

Go by the old house, pick any of the trails we showed you. Don't let them in the woods, but as long as you can see them, it's all good. I let them wander pretty far, especially Watson.

If you can only keep an eye on one dog: watch Adler, Watson will always come back.

They do not f*** with other dogs, if you see one, leash them immediately. Very low chance of this happening (no off-leash dogs seen out there in years). If it happens and you can only grab one dog, grab Adler. Watson is more tolerant.

Aim for about half an hour per walk, but it's fine to cut it short if it's freezing. You're also welcome to just take them out in the yard.

Watch for coyotes and elk, they'll chase. Vibrate the collar to stop them from running.

Outside time

They're allowed to wander around the yard if you're sort of paying attention. Keep the e-collars on if you're unsure. They'll come back in, or come when called.

E-collar

Watson = black button    Adler = red button

To turn collars on: press the turned-on remote to the magnet on the collar.

Default to vibrate. If you need to shock (likely only Adler), a 4 works.

Process

  1. Call them: "Adler, Watson, come!"
  2. Once they turn toward you, say "yes!" and back up or make encouraging noises.
  3. If they don't come, call again.
  4. If they don't immediately turn, press vibration, usually once for Watson, a few taps for Adler.
  5. Give a treat once they come (don't let Watson chomp you).

Rigby treats are kept in the fridge.

They're both fairly good about coming the first time, usually.

Check-ins

If either dog offers a volunteer check-in (comes back to you on the walk without being called), reward with a treat. Might get annoying, but we want them to associate coming to you with good things.

Heating

We usually burn wood in the snow, since the radiant heating is either off or lava. Every bedroom and bathroom has a heater, feel free to use those. Space heaters are in the office too. (Want the radiant heat on? Let us know and we'll walk you through it.)

Bedroom thermostat is behind the door, on the knob. Office thermostat is also knob-controlled. Bathroom heater is by the toilet.

Wifi

Network: adlerandwatson (pretty sure, double check with us if it doesn't connect)

Treadmill

The display is broken, we need to deal with that, sorry!

Guest bedroom

If someone ends up sleeping in there, the shower doesn't work. We should look into it but it's creepy and weird so we haven't.

Other things

  • Trash is picked up Wednesday morning.
  • Can't boil water and run the air fryer at the same time.
  • Breaker box is in the laundry room if something trips.
  • Don't leave trash overflowing or food on the counter within dog reach, sometimes they decide to be dicks.
  • We leave the front door unlocked, but the back doors (bedroom and kitchen) should be locked when you leave, they tend to blow open, and then Adler runs off and tries to join another family.
